Moving house is challenging enough without soaring temperatures adding to the pressure. Whether you’re moving during a summer heatwave or simply on a particularly warm day, a little preparation can make all the difference.
From keeping everyone hydrated to protecting your belongings from the heat, these practical tips will help you enjoy a safer, smoother moving day.
We’ve faced a series of heatwaves this summer and, despite temperatures reaching a scorching 40 degrees, we’re very proud to say that all of our clients were still able to move as planned.
If you’re concerned about upcoming hot weather impacting your house move, there’s no need to stress. Our team has shown just how robust and adaptable we are whatever the environment, and will always strive to deliver the best service for our wonderful customers.
How we adapted to record temperatures
The heat wave in July 2022 saw the UK experiencing the hottest temperatures on record, and some customers were worried that it would mean their moves might not go as planned.
Staff members in all areas of our business were significantly affected by the heat, but didn’t let that stop them from providing a great, efficient service.
Moving house is a physically demanding job that’s made much harder by hot weather, but all our moves planned during the heatwave were able to go ahead on schedule.
To keep our workers safe, we planned lots of cold water breaks and took things at a slower pace than usual.
Tipper drivers and hauliers were able to adapt at a moment’s notice, with some drivers changing to night shifts to make use of the slightly cooler evening weather. Drivers who remained on days made full use of the aircon in their trucks and avoided being outside unnecessarily .
At our HQ, our office-based team members did their best to stay cool in order to serve our customers, with many taking regular strolls into our ice cold warehouse to cool down.
How to Prepare for Moving House During a Heatwave
Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Keep bottles of water easily accessible for everyone involved in the move and avoid too many caffeinated or sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.
Dress for the weather
Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and comfortable footwear. A hat and sunscreen are also essential if you’ll be spending time outside loading or unloading the removal vehicle.
Pack an essentials bag
Keep important items with you rather than packing them away. Include:
- Water and snacks
- Medication
- Phone chargers
- Important documents
- A change of clothes
- Toiletries
- Towels
Having these items close to hand means you won’t need to search through boxes during the hottest part of the day.
Protect heat-sensitive belongings
Electronics, candles, toiletries, artwork and certain household items can be affected by high temperatures. Where possible, transport valuable or delicate belongings in an air-conditioned vehicle and avoid leaving them in direct sunlight.
Look after children and pets
Moving day can be tiring for everyone, particularly during very hot weather. If possible, arrange for children or pets to stay with friends or family, or ensure they have a cool, shaded place to rest with plenty of water.
Allow extra time
Hot weather can slow things down. Plan for regular breaks and don’t rush heavy lifting. Taking your time is far safer than risking exhaustion or injury.
