Pack Like the Professionals with Matt Ballard
Packing is one of the biggest jobs when you’re moving house, but getting a few simple things right can make a real difference on moving day.
To help you prepare, our Group Managing Director, Matt Ballard, has put together a series of short videos packed with practical tips we’ve learnt from helping families move home for more than 45 years.
From building sturdy boxes and packing fragile kitchen items to sealing and labelling everything properly, these videos will help you protect your belongings and make unpacking much easier when you arrive at your new home.
If you’d rather leave the packing to us, don’t worry – our team is always happy to help. But if you’re packing yourself, Matt’s top tips are a great place to start.
STEP ONE – BUILDING BOXES
Building a cardboard box might seem straightforward, but it’s one of the most important parts of packing properly. A poorly built box can quickly lose its shape or give way under the weight of your belongings, increasing the risk of damage during your move.
In this short video, Matt shows you the best way to build a strong removals box, so it’s ready to safely carry your belongings.
At Ballards, we use high-quality removals boxes designed to protect your possessions, and they’re available to purchase if you’re packing yourself.
STEP TWO – PACKING PLATES
Kitchen items are often the first things people worry about packing, but with the right technique they’re much less likely to get damaged.
In this video, Matt demonstrates how to create a protective base inside the box before carefully packing plates vertically to reduce movement and help prevent breakages during transport.
It’s a simple method that can make a big difference when you unpack at your new home.
REMEMBER – pack your plates vertically!
STEP THREE – GLASSES & TUMBLERS
Glasses and tumblers need a little extra care, but packing them properly doesn’t have to be complicated.
Matt explains why each glass should be wrapped individually before being packed securely into the box, helping to protect them throughout the journey. He also shares a simple tip for stacking tumblers safely to make the best use of space without increasing the risk of damage.
STEP FOUR – MUGS & STEMMED GLASSES
Awkward handles and delicate stems often make mugs and wine glasses some of the trickiest items to pack.
In this video, Matt shares a few simple techniques for protecting these more delicate items, including how to support handles and stems with extra wrapping to help keep everything safe while it’s in transit.
STEP FIVE – PADDING & SEALING A BOX
A well-packed box shouldn’t have room for things to move around.
Matt explains why filling any empty spaces inside the box is just as important as wrapping the items themselves, before showing the best way to seal and label your boxes ready for moving day.
Taking a few extra minutes here can save a lot of frustration when it’s time to unpack.
STEP SIX – LABELLING & LIFTING
The final stage is making sure every box is labelled clearly and can be moved safely.
In this video, Matt explains why it’s important to label boxes with the correct room, mark fragile items clearly and use safe lifting techniques to avoid injuries on moving day.
A little organisation now makes unpacking far easier once you’ve arrived in your new home.
