If you’re hiring a van from us, there will no doubt be some things you need to know.
We’ve put some of our most frequently asked questions here, but please feel free to contact us if there’s anything we haven’t covered.
Getting you on the road with our self drive van hire…
Ballards van hire is situated at Ballards Business Park, Markham Moor, just by the A1. Leave the A1 at the Markham Moor junction with the A57, follow the signs for Retford A638 and we're on London Road, just a short way down - you can't miss us! If using a sat nav use postcode DN22 0QX.
Any time from 7am on the day of hire Monday to Friday and from 7am to 8am on Saturdays.
If you wish, you can collect the van between 5pm and 6pm the night before, for an additional £10 overnight hire charge.
The van hire office is open until 6pm Monday to Friday. Vans can be returned up to 9pm, although you need to make arrangements with us so that we can confirm we can safely accept the vehicle and end your liability under the hire contract.
3 types:
Short wheel base Transit £50 per day Inc vat+ insurance
Hi-roof/ long transit £60 per day inc vat+ insurance
Luton £70 per day Inc vat+ insurance
Standard daily hire rates include insurance and apply to drivers aged between 25 and 70 with a clean licence. A day’s hire can run from 7am up to 8pm, or later by arrangement. Prices include VAT.
Yes, hire charges are discounted for weekly hire and we also have special weekend rates.
Yes. There is a standard excess of £1000, which can be reduced to £250 if you purchase our Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance for an additional charge of £10 per day.
You can see our Terms and Conditions here you’ll also receive a copy when you collect the van.
No, although you will need to provide your credit/debit card details for us to hold on file until you return the vehicle.
Drivers must be aged 25-70.
You can drive all our vehicles with a full driving licence if you’ve held it for a minimum of 2 years.
Our standard insurance covers drivers with up to six penalty points. If you have more than that, please call the office.
All of our vans are fitted with tie rails so you can secure your items to the sides of the van. You might also want to take our house-moving extras package, which includes protective blankets, security ties and a sack barrow to help you to move larger items like washing machines, for only £20. If you need packing boxes, bubble wrap, tape, polythene sofa bags, mattress bags or garment carriers, we can supply those too, at competitive prices.
You’ll need to bring your photocard driving licence along with another form of photo ID (such as a passport, bus pass, work ID card or library card), proof of address (utility bill or bank statement) and a DVLA Check Code.
To get your check code, visit the DVLA "View driving licence" page and follow the instructions on the site to produce a check code – this is case sensitive! You will need your Driving Licence number, National Insurance Number and Postcode.
No – all vans will be collected from and returned to our Hire Depot in Tuxford, unless you use our collection and delivery service (see below).
If it’s easier for you, we can deliver your hire van to you and collect at the end of the hire period. Additional charges apply, depending on the distance from our hire depot.
We are open for van collections from 7am to 8am on Saturdays and vans can be returned on Sundays and bank holidays. You can hire a van over the weekend at our discounted weekend rates.
Hire charge can be paid by debit or credit card.
No, you can’t take the vehicle outside mainland UK.
We’ll provide you with a full tank of diesel – please fill it back up before you return it to us.
There are some petrol stations nearby, if you’re coming from:
- Retford and Worksop – Shell Station, on the A1 Northbound at Markham Moor
- Ollerton – Tesco, Forest Road, New Ollerton
- Newark – BP Service Station, Great North Road, Cromwell
