Are you renovating your home?

You might need some more storage space – here are some options

Most of us have done some home renovation at some point, whether just stripping down and redecorating a room, redesigning a kitchen or bathroom, or having an extension built. According to a 2018 report by Hiscox, the number of homeowners choosing to improve their homes rather than move has risen fivefold since 2013, so if you’re planning to renovate or extend your home, you’re not alone!

Whenever you do any work in your home, you need to clear some space to work in and that can cause disruption to your use of the rest of the house whilst the work is being done. If you’ve watched any of the home improvement TV shows, you’ll know that this applies even when you’re extending your property and building new rooms, some of your existing space is likely to be unusable for a time.

The recent trend towards more “open plan” living inevitably involves knocking down walls, which of course creates dust and debris. So, rather than feeling as though you’re living in a muddle, with boxes everywhere and furniture out of place or at risk of damage whilst work is being done, why not move some of your things into storage?

Storage can be arranged for a few days, weeks or longer, if you need it. There are different ways of arranging temporary storage:

Managed storage facilities

Typically, you will have one or more wooden crates which can be packed for you by the storage company, taken to their storage facility and redelivered to you when you’re ready. This is a good method to use if you can identify things that you’re unlikely to need whilst the work is being done. Whilst the crates are large enough for most types of furniture, anything really large can be sealed up and stored separately in a secure warehouse.

If you self-store, you will have access to a secure garage sized container, which you will pack yourself, and just in case you inadvertently pack the kettle, you will be able to access your container 24/7, so you can remove or add anything.

Storage at your own home

If you have some accessible outside space on level ground, you can rent a lockable storage container, which will be delivered to you. Sizes can vary, and Ballards containers for example are approx. 20 x 8 x8 ft – room for furniture, sports equipment etc as well as your smaller items. The benefit of this approach to storage is that you have immediate access to anything in the container, on your own property. This can be a very cost effective and convenient option for periods of 4 weeks or more.

Feeling good about your home improvements

There’s no doubt that making improvements to your home, on whatever scale, can make you feel good and help you to enjoy your home more – that’s why you’re doing it after all! But the process can be stressful, so why not alleviate some of the pressure by removing some of your furniture and treasured possessions into temporary storage?
